HLSL and Me

by Ian on Aug.26, 2009, under Rants

Similarities to Smalltalk:

  1. The documentation is uselessly vauge.
  2. It has very limited development tools
  3. People who can’t use it right think they can and post tutorials… those who truely know it sit back and laugh. They didn’t get help, so why should we?

Difference:

  1. HLSL is useful!

On a more serious note, HLSL, or High Level Shader Language, is actually really cool.  Even in shader model 2, where I am limited to 64 arithmatic instructions, is extreamely powerful!  Once you get used to it of course…

You just have to think in vectors!

How Nerds Do Movie Night.

by Ian on Jun.06, 2009, under Life

Most nerds have a “Star Wars Movie Night.” Real nerds watch the original, Han shot first edition of the movies. Only the nerdiest of nerds watch it on Laserdisk.

Disk Comparison

One provides high fidelity uncompressed analog video, CD quality audio, and is a supperior frisbee. The other is convenient and fits in your pocket.

On Laserdisk, the Star Wars trilogy takes up 9 disks the size of dinner plates, storing 180 gigabytes of data per disk, which have to be flipped/changed every 30 minutes. But it is worth it to pay hommage to the format that proves that superrior quality is trumped by convenience; to honor a format before its time.

At three times the size of an Xbox 360, a Laserdisk player is not compact by any stretch of the imagination. Though, what did you expect for a disk format that is 12" in diameter!

All in all movie night was great.  It was nice seeing the original films again without any post-post-production “improvements.  The effects, especially in the second and third movies, are amazing for the time period.  If you can, I recomend trying to find a copy of the originals… preferably on Laserdisk, but if you ae the type that likes to relax and just enjoy a film, donyt worry I won’t judge you.

That’s all for now!
